From Bits and Bytes to Insights: Launching the Data Recon Blog

Hey there, my name is Blake Downward from Australia. Background in e-commerce, finance and economics - now making the move to Data Science and applied Machine Learning.

Hi all, welcome to the Data Recon blog.

This is the first post for this series, so let me introduce myself and the types of content you can expect to find here in the future.

My name is Blake Downward, and while I've been tinkering with Python since 2017 (almost daily), I've always considered myself more of a data enthusiast than a programmer. Sure, I've written dozens of scripts to "Automate the boring stuff with Python" in my e-commerce business (shout-out to Al Sweigart), and I've even had plenty of clients pay me handsomely to scrape, extract, and transform large datasets. But despite these experiences, I still don't consider myself as a Python "programmer".

Perhaps this is a case of "imposter syndrome" creeping in - the feeling that the more you learn about something, the more you realise how much you really don't know. Or maybe it's just the fact that I didn't study computer science, and I doubt I'd even pass an intermediate coding exam. And you know what? That's completely okay with me.

Python, as a tool (even for a hack like me) - has proven to be one of the most valuable skills I've acquired over the years, and I would love to inspire other "non-programmers" to bring basic scripting into their daily workflows for getting stuff done (like a boss!).

At my core, I'm a data guy. I studied undergrad commerce and finance, then pursued postgrad studies in economics. Throughout my academic journey, statistics and econometrics were the backbone of my learning. It all started with an "Introduction to Business Statistics" course at uni, and I've been fascinated by the sheer power of data ever since.

Back in 2017, my path inevitably led me to Python. Microsoft Excel was transitioning to a subscription model, and uploading CSVs to Google Sheets was starting to feel like a chore. I needed a more efficient way to manipulate and analyse tabular data - without the bloat of unnecessary features... and that's when Python stepped in.

Like many, I started my journey with Al Sweigert's famous book "Automate the Boring Stuff with Python" (actually, I followed his Udemy course with the same name), and started applying the concepts as I learned them to automate tasks in my e-commerce business.

I started to notice that each time I ran a script, I was genuinely saving myself time and energy. With the extra time and energy I had on my hands, I was able to start learning more complex techniques and began expanding my scripts to automate these tasks even more. This led to even more time on my hands, and the proverbial "snowball" continued to grow.

So, what can you expect from the Data Recon blog? Well, primarily, I'll be showcasing my adventures (yes, it seriously can be fun and adventurous) in machine learning, data science, and more general Python projects. From wrangling, cleaning and dissecting complex datasets to building deep predictive models - I'll be sharing my insights, challenges, and wins along the way.

It won't just be programming jargon and code snippets though. I also want to delve into the personal side of data science - including my journey as I transition from e-commerce to a career in machine learning and data science.

The first step towards this goal is to start positioning myself as a data professional for potential clients and employers. This means building an online prescence (hence this blog) and showcasing my data skills by publishing the ever-growing catalogue of projects I've worked on or currently working on. At the moment for example, I'm building a field recorder for logging aircraft positional data with a Raspberry Pi and RTL-SDR (software defined radio) - so I will have plenty of cool things to share with you about automating tasks with physical devices too.

So, whether you're a seasoned data professional or a curious novice taking your first steps with scripting, there'll be something for everyone on the Data Recon blog - so go ahead and jump on the mailing list to get fresh content as soon as it's posted.

OK, well done! We've made it to the end of the post but the journey has only just begun. It's over to you now... where are you on your journey? Maybe you have some tips or advice to help me get started? Say g'day and let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Untill next time...
